are speaking out about the murder-suicide involving the kansas city chiefs jovan belcher and his girlfriend. ed lavandera is working the story for us. tell us what's going on. >> reporter: we're still trying to get to the bottom of the question everyone is asking. why did this happen? we spoke with a spokesperson close to the family of kasandra perkins saying they had no idea, no clue something like this could happen. >> i believe our suspect is chiefs player so whoever goes over there, proceed with caution. >> reporter: hearing the voices of kansas city police officers racing to make sense of what happened moments after belcher shot his girlfriend perkins at least three times. >> okay. i've got two coaches, one other employee here trying to talk with him. >> reporter: they did not know that belcher had just killed his girlfriend, head coach right in front of him. >> i was trying to get him to understand that life is not over. he still has a chance and let's get this worked out. >> reporter: but belcher did not listen. >> we've got shotted fired. self inflicted. one in the head. get in there. >
whitfield. >> kansas city chiefs jovan belcher has committed suicide after allegedly killing his girlfriend. he allegedly shot his girlfriend multiple times at the couple's home. the paper said the two had been arguing. he then drove to a practice facility at the chiefs arrowhead stadium, woalked up to had coac and general manager, thanks them for what they had done for him, then shot himself in the head. joining us, nfl senior reporter, don banks. what do you know of this? how do you put it into perspective? >> it's a pretty unique situation in terms of nfl history. i think this is really the first time we have ever had this situation where a double murder and a player committing suicide the day before a game is scheduled in that stadium in that city. it's a tragedy. i think the nfl is little bit working without a map because they never had a situation quite this immediate to deal with, and quite this tragic. >> and what is so incredible about this is clearly, by thanking, reportedly, his coach and the general manager, i mean, they must be replaying that moment, you know, when he pulled th
jovan belcher. as you well know belcher committed suicide after killing his girlfriend kasandra perkins on saturday. the couple leaves behind a 3-month-old daughter. perkins funeral is today in texas. jovan belcher's murder/suicide led to another controversy for the nfl this year. the league that has dealt with deaths of current and former players, concussions, high profile lawsuit and bounties. the question on sunday, should the chiefs have played the game with carolina just a day after belcher and kasandra perkins' deaths. that's just one topic that nfl commissioner roger goodell addresses in this issue of "time" magazine. the senior editor wrote the piece and joins us now. welcome. >> good morning, carol. >> so what did the commissioner tell you about belcher and the decision to play the game on sunday? >> yeah. you know, his reaction was -- he was stunned. he gets a phone call from his director of security and hearing the details and he can't believe what he's hearing. he starts to hit the phones and he knew that there was pressure not to play the game and there were thoughts on tha

. this weekend kansas city chief player jovan belcher killed his girlfriend, the mother of his child, and then drove to the chiefs stadium and shot himself to death right in front of his coaches. to be clear, we do not know the causes or the reasons behind this tragedy, but we have seen six nfl players take their own lives in as many years. studies have shown that some of these players have something called cte, chronic traumatic encephalopathy. it's like an alzheimer's type of position attributed to repeated head injuries. our senior cnn medical correspondent elizabeth cohen has been looking into this story, and there are -- there's more information. it's incredibly coincidental, but there's more information coming out about head trauma and repeated head trauma and how this can effect the brains of pro athletes. give me a bit of a feel for what these studies are saying. >> there's one big study that is just coming out today and is done at boston university, and people have looked at brains of athletes who have had this condition after they died, done an autopsy. sort of here and the
